Frequently Asked Questions

Who becomes the owner of property purchased and converted into a reserve with my or my company’s contribution?
Land purchased and converted into reserve with funds raised from Donations for Land Purchase becomes the direct property of Instituto Uiraçu. Opting for the Land Purchase to Expand the Protection of Serra Bonita, the donor becomes the owner of the land and can hand over the management of area to Instituto Uiraçu through a perpetual lease. This lease contains a performance-related break clause which permits the owner dissatisfied with the administration of the reserve to assume autonomy over the management of the area.

Apart from the purchase of the land will I or my company have to pay any other costs?
Yes. The owner must pay all related costs including: land transfer taxes; land register fees; survey fees and costs of conversion into reserve. A complete estimate of these costs, according to the size of the property, can be provided by IU. Negotiation and purchase and the paperwork involved in the process to convert the area into a reserve may be conducted by Instituto Uiraçu on behalf of the purchaser through mutual agreement.

What are the real impacts of my support for IU’s work?
You will be making a significant contribution towards avoiding the destruction of the great biodiversity sheltered by the remaining unprotected tracts of forest within Serra Bonita and your support will ensure the long term protection of the forest and the vital services it provides including: provision of fresh water to the entire urban population (55,000 habitants) of the towns of Camacan and Pau Brasil; mitigation of one of the major causes of climate change through avoidance of emissions of carbon stored in forest biomass and soils and removal of CO2 from the atmosphere through the natural regeneration of degraded areas. Part of the funds raised will also go towards the development of research and outreach activities developed by IU in the local community.

What are the “Management Costs” covered by my donation to the Serra Bonita Conservation Fund?
These are the costs involved in assuring the effective long term conservation of the Reserve and its area of influence, including: day to day enforcement and vigilance activities; elaboration and implementation of the Serra Bonita Reserve Complex management plan; related staff costs (salaries, uniforms and equipment); transport, fuel and vehicle maintenance; basic infra-structure maintenance. Your donation will also contribute to costs of research and outreach activities in the local community of Camacan.

What do I or my company gain in return?
