The course held in the Serra Bonita Reserve with support from Camacan Town Council and Instituto Uiraçu occurred in two modules on 19/20 September and 3/4 October. Fifteen people took part in the course, including members of the Municipal Environment and Environmental Education Councils, youths, teachers and members of Instituto Uiraçu. The course was given by the agronomist Ulrike Rapp de Sena, coordinator of the Centre of Environmental Experiences Manacá in Ibicaraí, Bahia. In 2008 Ulrike perfected her skills through the innovative methodology of Deep Ecology for Environmental Education in California where she studied with the Eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, author of the acclaimed book “Our Life as Gaia” (Gaia being the Ancient Greek God Mother Earth).
The words of one of the participants sum up the profound effect of the course: the course offered me a previously unknown world and gave me strength to fight for a better world.
The course will be repeated with various groups in the coming months as a new partnership between The Serra Bonita Reserve, Camacan Town Council and Instituto Uiraçu, acting together for the development of local actors for the preservation of the Atlantic Forest that depends on the functioning of the Planet’s vital systems.
