A group of 20 researchers and students from the Museum of Zoology, São Paulo University and University of California (Berkeley) carried out a workshop on reptiles and amphibians of the Atlantic Forest between 15 February and 2 March. The Brazilian contingent was headed by the biologist Dr. Miguel T. Rodrigues and the group from Berkeley by Professor Carolina Carnaval. During the workshop various collections were made in different points throughout the Reserve. As a result, 47 species of amphibians and 30 reptiles were registered. According to the scientists, this is a remarkable result considering the short time dedicated to collections. To have an idea of the significance of these results, the Brazilian record for number of amphibian species in a specific area is 102 which were registered during a period of 30 years and as part of an intensive collection programme. A report of the workshop’s findings will shortly be available on this site.
