Exchange Visit of the Central Corridor Project of the Atlantic forest

Members of the Central Corridor Project of the Atlantic Forest, Bahia/ Espírito Santo visited the Uiraçu Institute from 9 to 11 November, 2010.

On the first day of the visit, the participants saw projects linked to the Family Agriculture of IESB, around São José de Vitória and Una, and various activities of the Uiraçu Institute like the educational trail at Fazenda Paris, the preparation of compost with plant by-products, the planting of fruit trees associated with native species of the Atlantic forest and the production of organic cocoa. Towards the end of the afternoon the participants visited the facilities of the Serra Bonita Reserve and met the proprietors.  They saw the museum collection of tropical Lepidoptera, were told of the research being conducted and visited several places with beautiful views of the area and the town of Camacan.

On the second day the group went to the municipalities of Eunápolis and Itabela where they visited several reforestation projects in areas of APP and Gallery Forests conducted in collaboration with private sector initiative, planters' cooperatives, private tree nurseries and associations of small rural producers. The participants saw interesting experiments to add to their previous knowledge on the subject, while several of them provided information of their work to add in the projects they visited.

The results of the visit added to those obtained from a visit in August to projects in Espírito Santo State, demonstrated that such visits are very profitable to all involved.
